First of all, Hi! Hi! I was on vacation, but I'm back now and regular postings will commence once again!
Okay, Craftsy. I think I can safely be called a Craftsy quilt class junkie. I have taken many of their online classes and oh! the things I have learned! Within each class, there are lessons and, in the case of their quilt classes, each usually covers a technique or method. The instructors chosen by Craftsy really know their craft and within minutes after starting a class I've learned something new. I would describe Craftsy quilt classes as technique classes, meaning that instead of teaching a specific project or pattern, they explain a process, or cover a method that can be applied in all kinds of ways. That appeals to me, because I tend to compose my own quilts vs. using patterns, and have enough confidence as a quilter to run with a technique, even if I don't follow it correctly (for example, I recently took a class taught by Katie at Drygoods and totally screwed up my block! Katie graciously called it a "new" block instead of a mistake, but still... I think we both knew I wasn't following the directions. I tend to do this alot.)
I was offered the opportunity by the folks at Craftsy to take "Pattern Free Quiltmaking" taught by Joe Cunningham. This is one of their newest quilting classes and I wasn't quite sure what I would learn, but the title seemed appealing. And the class is GREAT! I love Joe's technique and easygoing teaching style, I love that he's male (sounding sexist here, but I'm always happy to see male quilters). His style is "take these rules that I came up with and use them only as long as they work for you, then break them". He then proceeds to show us how he himself does just that! I can't wait to try some of these techniques, adding to the idea of "play" and how inspired it can become for me. What you come away with after taking this course is the confidence that being spontaneous can (as we know deep down in our creative souls...) yield some pretty amazing quilts. Follow this link to view Joe's instructor video, read his bio, and see some student work from the class.
Craftsy is graciously offering one wise craft reader the chance to take Joe Cunningham's "Pattern Free Quiltmaking" for free (regular price is $39.99). Follow this link to sign up and be eligible for the giveaway (you are not eligible by leaving a comment on this post).
I will leave the giveaway open until Sunday, June 30 at 5 pm Pacific Time.*
*(Just a note to say I am rethinking the whole giveaway idea here on the blog and taking a closer look at just how I will continue to do it. I have turned away giveaway offers over the past few months and wanted everyone to know that this giveaway is kind of an exception and the idea that I'm rethinking the concept of giveaways still stands.)
