It is feeling more like Fall around here with kids back in school and new routines creeping into our days. And I have plenty to do with all this new found alone time. But what am I doing? I'm changing little things here and there around the house, futzing and fluffing, just like I do with every new season. I've been doing this rite of seasonal passage in our house for so long that nobody blinks an eye when they see me wrapping a large (tall as my hip) piece of driftwood with yarn. Just 'cause.
I brought this piece of driftwood home from one of our trips to the beach over the summer and was thinking I would paint it like the smaller pieces I had. I was also thinking about ombre, which I love, and then I noticed some yarn-wrapped branches in the newest Martha Stewart Living. Hey, I have yarn! Off on a crafting tangent I went. I wrapped the driftwood with varying colors of yarn to create a bit of an ombre effect. Yarn-wrapped branches are certainly nothing new, but I thought it would be fun to try wrapping a large piece.
To make your own, just find a large branch, and gather several shades of your chosen yarn color (I used 5 colors: cream, oatmeal, light blue, medium blue, and dark blue). Starting with the lightest color on one end of the stick, tie a half knot as close to the end as you wish (I let the driftwood show on the ends of mine).
Overlap the beginning and ending of each "stripe" of color with a few wraps. Continue all the way to the other end of the stick.
That's really all there is to it. No glue needed. If I ever decide I would like to paint this piece, I can easily take off the yarn. And with more subtle color changes you could definitely create a true ombre effect. But I love it when projects cost no money!
Enjoy your Monday. I'm off to the races!
