Two evenings of making at least a million pompoms and here's the result. Our "green themed" auction was last night. Its done! Using "The World Ahead" as our inspiration, all the decorations were earth-inspired round shapes.
Click on the photos to see them larger which is better.
Peter constructed a cross shaped wooden frame from 1" x 2" and we painted it black (which is why you hopefully cannot see it above). We were working with union lighting crews, paid by the hour, so rather than have them hang all of this individually, this entire fixture was constructed by us to be raised up by them as one piece. (I didn't take pictures when this was happening because I was holding my breath!) From it we hung lights, the pompoms (strung together in clusters with monofilament to hang down), clipped rice paper lanterns over some of the individual lights, and hung some down from ribbon. The whole feature was centered over the dining tables, the idea being to create a slightly more intimate space (this room is huge and the ceilings are over 18ft tall). Its all suspended about 5ft from the ceiling.
The tables had gorgeous white tulips thanks to my friend C, handmade green salmon made by the Kindergartners, and dark green bowls made by the older students. The napkins rings were made from actual seeded paper (embedded with wildflower seeds), that can be taken home and planted in dirt.
I am happy to say every bit of this will be reused...the middle school alumni students that came to help were quite enchanted with the pompoms so they got a few, several will be used for decorating at a birthday party for one of the kindergartners girls, and the rice paper lanterns and lights will go on to live a successful life decorating weddings with my friend C.
