(Gingerbread house-making day was Sunday, we've added the snow since this shot.)
Conversation in the car the other day-
Emma: Is Santa real?
Peter: Do you think he's real?
Emma: Well, I do, but some kids at school say he's not.
Peter: Think about it this way...is it more fun to believe? or not believe?
Emma: (long pause)
believe.
ughhh...I had a feeling that kind of question would be coming soon. Made me a little sad, but I thought Peter made a great save. I am sure I would have stumbled over a very long, drawn out explanation that in the end would make no sense (sort of like I do here on the blog). Remind me to tell you about how I tried to explain bullying once. Nobody got it, including me. Ian, on the other hand, is doing the "full immersion" Christmas. His belief is completely unwavering and without questioning. I find this all makes it more fun for me, so I don't want it all to come down to brass tacks just yet. In time, of course they will put it all together. It did occur to me how funny it is to stop to consider some of the season's traditions and our kid's ability to take it in. Think about how odd it is. We talk with our kids of stranger danger when its appropriate and understandable, and think about it all the time. Then from Halloween night through till Christmas, we're asking them to walk up to stranger's homes, knock on the door and ask for candy...then go sit on a rather large man's lap and ask for things. Think about it.
Thanks so much for the quilt love yesterday (especially you mom, it would just suck if you hated it.) I've moved on to new the next gift, this time something for Emma. When did Christmas get so close? We got the tree up, general household decor holiday-ized, but just when I thought I was done I was reminded that there are several things we haven't even put out yet (um, like stockings, where are they?)! And somebody please tell me just where and when and why I got all these decorations? Well, the best part of the tree is all the handmade ornaments. I adore each and every one of them, many from my first Christmas after starting the blog. A new one this year is one of Diana Fayt's silhouette porcelain tags. I love the way it sounds when it klinkles with the other ornaments on the tree. I hope to get one of her other pieces one day, but I'm very happy with this little gem for now. It'll be staying out after the tree comes down.
I wasn't quite gathered to talk about kid gifts today, so more on that later in the week.
Completely unrelated question of the day...I'm ever so curious as to what the next evolution of the whole blog world will be. What do you think? Seriously, there's got to be a next phase, I feel it coming, do you? Does that make sense?
